VESSELS

My work centers on themes such as the passage of time, the transmission of traditional techniques, and the ambiguity of human existence.

In my vessel series inspired by the traditional Mino technique Gaba-ikomi, I reinterpret the method in a contemporary way, questioning the boundary between a “vessel to use” and a “sculpture to contemplate.”

One-of-a-kind vessel works made by Hijiri Tougane’s own hands. The number made each year is limited, and every piece is created as an original. Each is inscribed with the year and her signature, and stands as a record of its technique and its time.
